Is Rocky Mountain Sunscreen Reef Friendly?

Summer will be here before you know it, and it’s important to start thinking about sunscreen for your family’s upcoming adventures. When you’re choosing a sunscreen, you may be concerned with whether it offers broad-spectrum protection, if it’s water-resistant, or if it’s gentle for sensitive skin. Probably the last thing you’re wondering about is whether or not it’s reef-friendly. However, recent reports and findings are showing that sunscreens made with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemicals are harming the coral reefs and other marine wildlife and ecosystems. If you and your family use Rocky Mountain Sunscreen, then you already know that it’s oxybenzone and octinoxate-free. As you’re packing for summer vacation or getting ready to enjoy warmer weather, don’t forget to stock up on your favorite bulk size of Rocky Mountain Sunscreen. Hypoallergenic, non-greasy, and moisturizing, Rocky Mountain Sunscreen is the perfect companion to all of your spring break and summer plans. Order yours now!

What is “Reef-Friendly”?

You may be wondering what reef-friendly means and why it’s so important. Well, in 2016 a study was published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), researchers found that baby coral exhibited signs of distress and coral bleaching when exposed to oxybenzone and octinoxate. Fish and other marine life also showed abnormalities, even at low concentrations of oxybenzone and octinoxate. Because of this research, many marine biologists and scientists agree that all sunscreen needs to be oxybenzone and octinoxate-free to help preserve the health and integrity of the oceans for years to come. Hawaii banned all sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in 2018, and many other states are moving towards banning these harmful chemicals too.

How to Be Reef-Friendly This Summer

Now that you understand what reef-friendly means, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing sunscreen and other sun protection items that are better for the environment. Of course, don’t forget your favorite Rocky Mountain sunscreen or sunscreen mist. It’s important to check other safe sun products too, such as your favorite facial moisturizer or makeup. If you’re planning to go into the ocean, it’s best to leave anything containing oxybenzone or octinoxate on dry land. Also, share Rocky Mountain Sunscreen products with your friends! Not only will there be plenty to go around because of our awesome bulk sizing, but you can rest assured that your kiddos and their friends will enjoy their days outside protected from sunburn and sun damage without harming marine life.

It’s super important to practice good sun safety, especially for kids. One bad sunburn before the age of 16 can double a child’s risk of skin cancer. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen regularly will help to greatly reduce that risk, and protect your kids from painful sunburns. You can also practice good reef safety too this summer by choosing to use sunscreens without oxybenzone and octinoxate. Rocky Mountain Sunscreen is proud to never use either chemical in our products. For the best reef-friendly sunscreen for your family, choose Rocky Mountain Sunscreen bulk sizes and protect your skin and the environment this summer.
